Experience the Wonder of the Sandhill Crane Festival
January 16–17, 2027
Make plans for a winter adventure in Tennessee’s Shoreline County!
The 36th annual Sandhill Crane Festival invites you to discover the wildlife and welcoming communities of the Birchwood and Hiwassee River area. Whether you’re a lifelong birdwatcher or simply looking for a memorable family outing, this weekend offers a wonderful reason to bundle up and explore.
The cranes are the stars of the celebration. Watch these graceful birds gather, stretch their wings, and take flight while their distinctive calls carry across the landscape. Keep your eyes open for eagles and waterfowl, too. Bring your binoculars or enjoy a closer look through spotting scopes with help from festival volunteers.
20,000 Sandhill Cranes Return Each Year!

Continue the fun at the Birchwood Community Center, also known as the Birchwood School, where live music, vendors, children’s crafts, and home-cooked food add to the festivities. Don’t miss Wings to Soar’s live raptor presentations, offering an opportunity to see birds of prey up close and learn about their role in the natural world.
The weekend also invites you to connect with the area’s history. Cherokee Trail of Tears State Park joins the festival as a partner in 2027, adding another meaningful stop to your visit. Take time to reflect at the Cherokee Removal Memorial and appreciate the river landscape from its overlook.

Turn your festival outing into a Meigs County getaway. Leave room to explore our communities, enjoy a meal at a local restaurant, and discover the quiet beauty of our countryside. Bring a camera, dress in warm layers, and wear comfortable shoes so you’re ready to enjoy the day outdoors.
We invite you to join us January 16–17 for a weekend of wildlife, learning, music, and community. Gather your family and friends and experience this special winter tradition for yourself!
